But there are many other aspects that can be overlooked, and that are just as important.

He told us about the ultra-resistant design of the equipment that makes up the brand's portfolio, but also about reinforcements in terms of security or connectivity that are carried out when developing these devices.

Andro4all: TOUGHBOOK devices are known for their strength and durability. Could you highlight some specific features that set TOUGHBOOK apart in terms of durability and how these features benefit businesses operating in harsh conditions?

Chiara Cabini: TOUGHBOOK devices stand out in terms of durability due to several features:

  • Rugged design: TOUGHBOOK devices are built to withstand drops, bumps and vibrations that would render traditional laptops or tablets inoperable. This rugged design includes reinforced corners, a protective casing, and solid hinges…

  • Military grade certification: TOUGHBOOK devices are rigorously tested to meet military durability standards, meaning they can withstand extreme temperatures, humidity, altitude, and exposure to dust and water.

A4A: Connectivity is crucial in today's industries. How does TOUGHBOOK ensure seamless connectivity across its entire product line, especially in environments where network reliability may be a concern, and what innovations can we expect in this regard in the near future?

CC:TOUGHBOOK prioritizes seamless connectivity across its entire product line, especially in environments where network reliability may be a concern. TOUGHBOOK devices typically offer a variety of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS, and even satellite communication.

This multimodal approach ensures that users can stay connected regardless of their location or the availability of traditional network infrastructure. These devices often incorporate multiple antennas for each connectivity option, allowing for better signal reception and resistance against signal degradation in challenging environments. We design and test our antennas to the highest possible standards in our own anechoic and radiation measurement facilities in Kobe, Japan.

Many newer TOUGHBOOK models also feature integrated SIM technology, allowing seamless switching between cellular networks without the need to physically swap SIM cards.

As for future innovations in connectivity, TOUGHBOOK will continue to improve its products with the integration of 5G. To use a private 5G network, in fact, devices need to meet two criteria: a chip that supports the licensed sub-6 band and a license for the chip to support 5GSA. We've built and designed two rugged devices equipped for private 5G: the TOUGHBOOK G2 and the TOUGHBOOK 40, each with our own antenna tested and manufactured by TOUGHBOOK.

A4A: Modularity is another key aspect of TOUGHBOOK's design philosophy. Could you explain how companies benefit from this modular approach, especially in terms of scalability and adaptability to evolving technological requirements?

CC: TOUGHBOOK's modular approach offers several benefits to businesses, such as the customization process: They are designed with modular components that can be easily swapped or upgraded to meet specific business needs. This customization capability allows businesses to configure devices with the exact features and specifications required for their workflows, in any industry and environment.

As businesses grow and their requirements change, TOUGHBOOK's modular design allows for easy scalability. Additional modules or components can be added to existing devices to expand functionality or adapt to new use cases, ensuring that investments in TOUGHBOOK devices remain relevant and profitable over time.

The modular nature of TOUGHBOOK helps businesses protect against technological advances and changes in the industry. Instead of having to replace entire devices to keep up with new technologies, businesses can simply upgrade or change individual modules, saving time and money.

A4A: Security is a top priority for businesses, especially when it comes to sensitive data in industrial environments. How does TOUGHBOOK address security concerns, both in terms of hardware features and software solutions, to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of user data?

CC: TOUGHBOOK prioritizes security to safeguard the integrity and confidentiality of user data in industrial environments.

Among the hardware security features, we have biometric authentication and hardware encryption: this ensures that even if the device is lost or stolen, the data remains encrypted and inaccessible to unauthorized persons.

Speaking of Software Security Solutions: TOUGHBOOK devices often come with built-in endpoint security solutions such as antivirus software, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems. These solutions help detect and mitigate security threats, protecting the device and the data it contains. TOUGHBOOK has remote management solutions that allow IT administrators to centrally monitor and manage devices, enforce security policies, and deploy software updates. Remote management capabilities enable rapid response to security incidents and ensure devices remain up-to-date with the latest security patches.

Data Encryption: TOUGHBOOK devices support data encryption at rest and in transit, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected from unauthorized access both on the device and during transmission over networks.

With the latest transition to Windows 11, the device proves twice as resistant to malware as previous iterations, helping businesses achieve a 58% reduction in cybersecurity incidents and a 20% reduction in attacks successful security measures.

A4A: TOUGHBOOK devices serve a wide range of industries, from logistics to healthcare to manufacturing. Can you share any success stories or use cases where TOUGHBOOK solutions have had a significant impact on improving productivity, efficiency or safety within these industries?

CC: In the logistics sector, UPS deployed TOUGHBOOK devices for its delivery and package tracking drivers. The ruggedness of TOUGHBOOK laptops and tablets ensured reliable performance in the field, even in adverse weather conditions. With real-time access to delivery information and routing data, UPS drivers were able to optimize their routes, leading to faster deliveries and higher customer satisfaction.

Emergency services workers are one of those responsible for keeping people safe. To serve the public, they rely entirely on the rugged devices they use, both inside and outside their vehicles. Panasonic responds to this need with its TOUGHBOOK range of rugged devices, consisting of tablets and laptops, currently used by a large number of organizations and emergency services with over 8,000 devices in service across Europe. These include the Department of Health and West Midlands Ambulance Service in the UK, ambulance services in Romania, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland and the Czech Republic, as well as 118 regional branches in Italy.
